Another area, close to Rustenburg town, is the KGASWANE Mountain Reserve, (locally known as the Nature Reserve).  This is situated on the western side of town, and, being part of the Magaliesberg, it overlooks the town of Rustenburg.

To me Kgaswane is a greatly under utilized place, being so close to the town.  It is cheap to get in, has accommodation if you require, as well as a camping and caravan area and a day visitors area.  There is a good variety of birding habitats, walking trails, a circular drive as well as a good mammal population.

On my 4 visits I recorded between 29 and 42 species, although the official list is over 240!!  To me, of note, were sightings of Cape Bunting, Short Toed Rock Thrush and Cape Rock Thrush.

John Sewards tells me that he normally finds Slender Billed Honeyguide, now called  Green Backed  Honeyguide, around the camping/caravan area during week days when it is quiet.  But I wasn't so lucky to find it during weekend visits.

Also, of note for me, was that the White Winged Widows found all around Rustenburg town are replaced at this higher altitude with Red -collared Widows.

If you require more information, or contacts, for the Rustenburg area please speak to me.
