Foskor CWAC count 13 February 2010 Print E-mail
Monday, 21 June 2010

We started from the mine gate at 6.15 Hrs.  It was an extremely hot and humid day from the start and had turned into a real "scorcher" by the time we had finished  5 hours later.

We were only 4 observers/counters that day, and were unable to use the boat on the main Selati Dam, so could only count from the surrounds of the dam at the limited access places.

Selati Dam gave us 19 different species, with a total of 205 birds, whilst the coffer dams, Van Rysen Dam and Selati River areas gave us 18 different species and only 77 birds.  The total different water bird species was 26.

Other birds ticked whilst traveling between the water bird counting areas was 45, giving a total of only 71 species.

The birds, like the birders, seemed keen to keep out of the sun!!

Foskor CWAC Survey 26 July 2008 Print E-mail
Sunday, 30 November 2008

Six of our members reported at the Foskor gate at the usual time 6:30 on a beautiful clear and calm morning. After a brief wait we joined up with Martiens Slabbert who escorted us to the Southern Selati Tailings dam where we started our survey. We had for the first time arranged with Foskor to do the survey of this dam from their boat, as it is difficult to reach all the gullys by means of a motor vehicle.

Five members manned the boat and it was clear from the outset that there are lots of birds to count. The variety of species was surprisingly good and we even spotted two Pink-backed Pelicans and White-winged Terns! At a little kopje that is half submerged in the water, the sheer quantity of breeding birds and chicks presented us with some challenges to get a reasonable accurate count. They were mainly African Spoonbills and White-Breasted Cormorants breeding and the almost unrestricted and open viewing was quite exciting.

As there is currently construction work underway at the small dams north of the Van Ruyssen dam few birds were in this area. At the Van Ruyssen dam the count was better but less than normal, probably also because of the construction activities.

From the table reflecting quantities of the birds found for the CWAC count we can assume that there must be a good supply of food available at these dams. The total of species found during the whole survey where 36 which is also quite good considering that the focus were on counting water birds.

Foskor Survey 2 June 2007 Print E-mail
Saturday, 02 June 2007

The Foskor Bird Survey took place on the 2nd June as planned at 6-30am.

Unfortunately Johan, who had organised the survey, was obliged to work so Charles took over from him at the last moment.  The morning dawned cool and cloudy with a fairly strong breeze.  Not ideal birding conditions. Never the less, pleasant weather for those doing the survey.  Our expected 6 Birders turned out to be only John Sewards, Charles and Biddy.  Two other members failed to arrive.
